At high tide the water will sit midway up the rocky coast and slowly lower to reveal the shore below before beginning to rise again.
Located in Maine on the Eastern most point of the US, the original tower was built in 1808 under orders from President Thomas Jefferson. The current lighthouse tower was built in 1858 and stands in West Quoddy Head State Park. It is 49 feet tall and is the only "Candy Striped" lighthouse tower in the United States. After being lit with everything from Sperm Whale oil to kerosene and finally converted to electricity, the light became fully automated in 1988 and is now maintained by the coast guard. It flashes 24 hours a day and is especially important during the brutal storms that rage along this rustic coastline.
