For over fifty years, Walker’s Cay was known as a fisherman’s paradise and the premier deep-sea fishing location. The 100-acre island sits on the edge of the Little Bahama Bank, which contains shallow, blue water averaging about ten feet in depth. However, just past the edge of the shelf, the waters plunge to great depths, creating perfect fishing conditions.
The island was originally named after Thomas Walker, a British judge who was sent to the island to manage issues with piracy in the 1700s. After Walker’s death, the island remained uninhabited until the early 1900s, when Florida businessman, Buzz Shonnard, bought the island from the Bahamian government and created the original resort and marina, supporting fishing and tourism. The island and resort changed hands again, ultimately being destroyed in the hurricanes of 2004. Walker’s Cay is currently being rebuilt and promises to be better than ever!
