While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit at the bottom edge of the rock, and slowly lower to reveal the bottom of the stilts and the shoreline below before beginning to rise again.
Located in Chesapeake Bay, the Thomas Point light is arguably one of the most recognized lighthouses from the East Coast. The original light station dates back to 1824, where it stood approximately 100 feet from the water edge. Due to shore erosion it was within 15 feet of the water by 1838 when plans were made to move it. Rebuilt behind the keepers dwelling, the second tower was made primarily of materials from the original tower, but now stood 3 feet taller. Due to the intense nature of winters in the area, it suffered a lot of damage over the years and has gone through many upgrades and renovations. In 1975 it was listed in the National Register of Historical Places and was the last lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay to be fully automated. It 1999 it was designated a National Historic Landmark, one of only nine lighthouse in the US to receive the recognition.
