While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit at the bottom edge of the rocky land, and slowly lower to reveal coastline below before beginning to rise again.
Thacher Island, originally dubbed "Thacher's Woe" for the sad events that lead to it's ownership, is a 50 acre historical site housing not one but two stunning lighthouses. Often called Twin Lights, these lighthouses were built in 1771 and were the first used to mark a dangerous area rather than a harbor entrance. They were also the last lighthouses build under British rule in the colonies. It was decided to build two lights rather than a single to make it easy to differentiate them from similar lights in Boston and Portsmouth. The current lighthouses that stand today were constructed in 1861, each standing 124 feet tall and are a tourist attraction and National Historic Landmark.
