The Scituate Lighthouse, located off the south shore of Boston, Massachusetts, is the fifth oldest lighthouse in New England and the eleventh oldest in the US. It was built to help guide ships into the harbor which contained both mudflats and shallows. It was made especially famous during the war of 1812 when two of the caretakers daughters stopped a potential British attack using nothing more than a fife, drum, and quick thinking. Hiding, they played Yankee Doodle on their instruments louder and louder in the hopes of making the Redcoats believe a Yankee army was on their way to meet them. The ship retreated and the fife is still on display in the keepers house.
