At high tide the water will sit close to the tree line, and slowly lower to reveal the shore below before beginning to rise again.
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, located in St. Augustine, Florida, stands 175 feet tall, making it the tallest in the state and one of the tallest in the country. First erected in 1835, the lighthouse was faced with one hardship after another, beginning with the light not being delivered. Soon after its completion the coast went through a rough storm that washed much of the sand away from it's base, weakening the structure. Then, in December of that year, during the Second Seminole War, the tower was attacked by the Natives; they smashed the glass and burned down the wooden stairs. No repairs could be completed during the war, and a year later the tower collapsed. The new tower was not built until 1887, despite numerous shipwrecks in the area. This final tower was converted to electricity in 1933 and was maintained by the Coast Guard until they abandoned it. The town of Ponce Inlet and the Lighthouse Preservation Association now care for it and it remains a huge tourist attraction for the area.
