Penfield Reef Lighthouse (CT) Mechanical Animated Tide Clock

While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit at the base of the rocky foundation, and slowly lower to reveal the reef island below before beginning to rise again.
Located on Penfield Reef in the south side of the Black Rock Harbor entrance on the Long Island Sound, off the coast of Fairfield, Connecticut, this lighthouse was first constructed in 1874. It was one of the last offshore masonry lights to be raised, most others being built of cast iron. This area of ocean has been referred to some of the most treacherous and dangerous waters of the Long Island Sound. There have been rumors of the area being haunted after one of the keepers drowned within viewing distance of the island in the early 20th century. While secluded lighthouses that stand alone far from the shore are always more likely to be proclaimed haunted, the numerous stories of sightings told within this area has brought much attention to the lighthouse over the years.
The lighthouse's foundation, structure and roofs were in good condition, according to a 2004 Town of Fairfield report, but the wood frame supporting the balcony around the tower was in need of major repairs. Other problems include asbestos tiles on the floor, lead paint on the walls, mold in most places and decaying brick and mortar work in the basement. The U.S. Coast Guard last had the lighthouse repaired in 2003. The lighthouse is connected to a two-floor keeper's quarters built of granite and timber frames on a concrete foundation surrounded by rocks. [8]
