While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit high on the retaining wall, and slowly lower to reveal the rocky coast below before beginning to rise again.
The Narragansett Towers were originally built between 1883 and 1886. They played a primary role in the social scene of Rhode Island, attached to the Narragansett Pier Casino, which was a place for gambling as well as a sport and entertainment center. It was a place of laughter and enjoyment until 1900, when a fire at an adjacent hotel caused the Casino to burn down. Only the Towers survived, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
