While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit just below the base of the lighthouse, and slowly lower to reveal the stony island below before beginning to rise again.
Located to the southeast of Boston Harbor, about a mile offshore of Scituate, Massachusetts, the Minot's Ledge Lighthouse was built out of necessity. More than 40 vessels had been lost to Minot's Ledge between 1823 and 1841, causing serious loss of life and property damage. The original lighthouse was lit in 1850, but was swept away in a storm little over a year later, leaving nothing but broken pilings behind. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1860 after being built for nearly 5 years and proved to be the most expensive lighthouse to be built in the US at that time.
