The original Columbia Yacht had a nickel steel frame, a tobin bronze hull, and a steel mast (later replaced with one of Oregon pine). She was the defender of the tenth America's Cup race that same year against British challenger Shamrock as well as the defender of the eleventh America's Cup race in 1901 against British challenger Shamrock II. She was the first vessel to win the trophy.

They are built to scale with high-grade wood such as western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany. They are 100% hand built individually using plank-on-frame construction method, a method that is used in the building of actual ships. Each model also requires many hours to finish and must go through a demanding quality control process before leaving the workshop. This model requires partial assembly. The boat is assembled, but sails, rigging, and masts are laid down, resulting in a smaller shipping box, which results in less expensive shipping.
The Large Columbia Yacht captures the beauty of the original with full sails that extend all the way up to the masthead. The hull is made of teak with inlay waterline, while the deck is strip built from wood planks that are carefully placed symmetrically for a beautiful finish. Realistically detailed, wooden hatches are also located forward on the deck, while the metal steering wheel is located just above the rudder. The brass stanchions hold up all the guard rails securely around the yacht. As a final touch, this model comes standard with a solid wood base and a brass nameplate.
