While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit just below the lighthouse, and slowly lower to reveal the rocky island below the water before beginning to rise again.
The Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, formerly known as Lloyd Harbor Lighthouse, is located in Huntington Bay on Long Island, New York. It was first established in 1857, when a lighthouse was built at the tip of Lloyd's Neck to help ships navigate to the shelter of Lloyd's Harbor. Because the light did not help much for navigation into Huntington Harbor, a new light was constructed in 1912 from cast reinforced concrete. The style of this new lighthouse was completely unique for the time; known as the Beaux Arts style, most find that it looks like a small castle. After falling into disrepair over many years, the lighthouse was officially deemed unsafe and too expensive for repair. It was saved from demolition by local citizens who became the first private group in the country to successfully restore an offshore lighthouse.
