The HMS Surprise has become famous as the 18th-century tall ship portrayed in the movie “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” starring Russell Crowe. The ship used in the Academy Award-winning film is actually a modern tall ship – a magnificent replica of a 24-gun Royal Navy frigate. The Surprise was painstakingly re-created to look like a vessel from the Revolutionary War Era. The replica ship was christened HMS Rose when launched in 1970 in Nova Scotia, and for more than 30 years it served as a sail-training vessel, primarily along the East Coast. In the movie, a fictional British frigate named the Surprise and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. The movie, directed by Peter Weir, was based on a book by author Patrick O'Brian. After the movie, the ship’s name was officially changed from the Rose to the Surprise. Today, the HMS Surprise resides dockside at the San Diego Maritime Museum and is still seaworthy.

This gorgeous ship is available as a FULLY ASSEMBLED model. Master craftsmen using historical photographs, drawings or original plans meticulously handcraft these highly detailed wood models from scratch. They are built to scale with high-grade wood such as western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany. They are 100% hand built individually using plank-on-frame construction method, similar to the building of actual ships. Each model requires hundreds of hours to finish and must go through a demanding quality control process before leaving the workshop.

On the ship, you can come across incredible features such as wooden bowsprit, foremast, mainmast, and mizzen mast. They are all connected to numerous full-sized fabric sails with detailed stitching. All rigging is painstakingly fastened by hand in matching colors. On the main deck, you will come across 2 wooden boats situated in a large rectangular area with 2 wooden bunkers, a wooden/metal steering wheel, and a telescope. On the poop deck, there’s a navigational area with 2 metal steering wheels for the captain and 1 wooden cabin. There are metal railings surrounding the beakhead area toward the quarter deck area. You can easily spot 2 rows of numerous metal cannons on both side of the hull. In addition, you will find supplementary crafted metal parts on the ship such as anchors, lantern, statues, and much more.

The included beautiful tabletop display case was made out of hardwood and painted in a rich dark mahogany. It has distinctive designs that add elegance and beauty when displayed in your home or office. It is 100% fully assembled and comes with plexiglass panels on all sides. It features the curved sides which enable it to accommodate models with wide yards. This case is very effective in preventing dust buildup as well as keeping your valuable tall ship looking new and protected at all times.
