At high tide the water will sit just below the lighthouse foundation, and slowly lower to reveal the rocky bar below before beginning to rise again.
Located in Orient, New York, the Long Beach Bar Lighthouse, commonly known by it's nickname 'Bug Light,' helps mariners navigate around the hazardous sandbar located between Orient Harbor and Gardiner’s Bay . It was originally constructed on screw piles in the 1870, but was destroyed by arsonists in 1963. In 1989, thanks to the generosity and many contributions of the local residents, the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation was able to construct a near replica of the original Bug Light. Today the 60 foot light stands not only as a much-photographed tourist destination, one of the only lighthouses in the area offering cruises and tours, but also as an example of the resilience, determination, and generosity of community in the North Eastern United States.
