While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit just below the trees, and slowly lower to reveal the coastline below before beginning to rise again.
First built in 1829, the Great Captain Island Lighthouse is located in the Western Long Island Sound near Greenwich, Connecticut. The original structure was made of stone and was constructed so poorly that within a decade the walls were severely cracked, but it remained in use until the new tower was completed in 1868. The new structure was a granite keeper's house with attached cast iron lantern on the roof. In 1970 the light was replaced by a freestanding skeleton tower.
