While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit high on the beach, and slowly lower to reveal the sandy and rocky shore below before beginning to rise again.
Located at the entrance to New Haven Harbor, the Five Mile Point Lighthouse is named after it's proximity to Downtown New Haven, which is about five miles away. The original tower was built in 1805 and stood about 50 feet above the water. Due to it's deterioration by 1847, it was replaced by a new stone and brick tower that was taller. It was decommissioned in 1877 when a new light made it redundant. It was given to the local city of New Haven and was ill-kept until it's renovation in 1986, when it was repaired and cleaned. It is now a point of interest on the itinerary of many people visiting the area.
