While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit at the edge of the seagrass, and slowly lower to reveal a wagon and crab on the sandy beach below before beginning to rise again.
The First Island Lighthouse is located on the Great South Bay, Suffolk County, New York. First built in 1826, it stood 74 feet tall and marked the western end of Fire Island. It was replaced in 1858 by the 180ft stone tower that stands today. The lighthouse was decommissioned twice by the National Guard: first in 1974, and then again in 2006 after returning to the island 1986. The shifting and collecting of the sands on Fire Island has extended the island, leaving the lighthouse 5 miles from the western end. Today it stands as a private aid to navigation and tourist attraction.
