While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit at the edge of the property, and slowly lower to reveal the coastline before beginning to rise again.
Also known as the Black Rock Harbor Light, this Bridgeport, Connecticut, lighthouse was first established in 1808. The original tower was a 40-ft octagonal structure made of wood that was destroyed during the hurricane in 1821. Two years later the current stone and rubble tower that stands today was erected. It worked as an active aid for navigation until 1933, when two offshore automatic lights were installed. The lighthouse was given to Bridgeport, who restored the aging tower between the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000 the lighthouse was relit, but does not serve as a navigational aid. While the lighthouse is not open to the public, the grounds are accessible.
