While the dial counts away the hours between tide cycles below, the top is mechanically animated to show the changing sea level in real time. At high tide the water will sit high on the coastline, and slowly lower to reveal the beach below before beginning to rise again.
Located on the southern Outer Banks, North Carolina, the original tower took 8 years to build. It was completed in 1812 and cost the government north of $20k to build. Standing at 96 feet tall, the brick tower proved to be too short to light the Lookout Shoals. The new tower was completed in 1859. Several years later, during the Civil War, the tower was damaged and the lens was removed, but by 1863 it was restored to working order. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse can only be accessed by private ferry, and is one of the few lighthouses with a museum, tours, and lighthouse climbs, making it a great tourist destination.
