Located in the Outer Banks, Buxton, North Carolina, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is often considered one of the most recognizable, famous, and beautiful lighthouses in the U.S. This light is extremely important for the safety of maritime travel, due to its location just off where the warm Gulf Stream current collides with the colder Labrador current. So many storms and swells happen in the area that it is nicknamed "Graveyard of the Atlantic." The lighthouse was officially built in 1802, after Alexander Hamilton lobbied for its construction after his ship almost crashed and sunk in the area. It was replaced in 1871 with the current light. The 198-foot tower remains the tallest brick lighthouse in the United states, and the second tallest in the world.
