We bet that you might not know (unless you are a history buff) that the invention of the barometer goes all the way back to the early 1600's. Evangelista Torricelli, who was a student of Galileo, has been given the credit for it's initial invention. Torricelli, as opposed by Galileo, postulated that air does have weight and it could cause a column of water to rise, or the absence of the weight of air would let the column of water drop. In other words, he concluded that it was an instrument of balance. He originally needed to keep the experiment and his findings secret, for fear of being persecuted as a "sorcerer". Imagine that!
