Piratical Nautical Home Decor for Little Pirates

Apr 14th 2015

Almost every kid goes through a pirate phase. They mutter “ARRGH”, they carry plastic or wooden swords, they wear a bandanna and eye patch, and refer to their friends as their crew. For some kids, the phase lasts longer than with others. If this is the case with your son or daughter, then you may want to consider a pirate themed bedroom to encourage their interest.

Kids spend most of their free time in their rooms, so the decor should reflect their personalities. Creating a pirate themed room is both easy and fun. Parents can get input from the children and together get ideas and make a plan.

First, work with what you already have in order to minimize cost. If you already have neutral walls, then you already have a clean palate for wall art, or even a pirate map mural. Next, look at the carpet or flooring color, blue carpet can be left alone to represent the ocean. Also a brown carpet or wood flooring can remain to represent a sandy beach.

The existing bed can be transformed into a pirate ship, by erecting a simple mast using a post and an old sheet that the kids can paint with the skull and cross-bones, or any symbol chosen to represent the kid pirate.

If the bed is a loft bed, paper lanterns can be strung underneath to create a ship’s cargo hold, you can add a treasure chest or even some small barrels for books, toys, or gold doubloons. You could also hang a hammock for reading or playing games.

A quick, nautical look can also be achieved by gluing rope around mirror and picture frames or by adding glow in the dark stars on the ceiling, after all pirates must navigate their ships by the stars.

Once you’ve turned current fixtures pirate, you can look for those special touches, like a globe mobile, pirate themed piggy banks, or even a boat book shelf. For more kid’s Nautical Home Decor as well as decor for the grown up pirates in your family, contact us for more information.
