Nautical Home Decor and Famous Ships

Feb 22nd 2015

The ocean means different things to people: danger, freedom, sea life. But one theme seems to tie all those varying concepts together, ships. No matter what type of ship, everyone needs one to explore or to escape from the sea.

There are ships that sail the seas and others that grace homes. People read about them and they are highly featured in art as well as in movies. Whether real or fictional, we just can’t seem to get enough of the vessels that sail the high seas.

Some of the most popular are pirate ships, due mostly to the allure of pirates themselves. Perhaps the most well- known pirate vessel is the fictional Jolly Roger, captained by James Hook in J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up and its various book, movie, and stage adaptations. Descriptions of the ship vary from adaption to adaption but the standard feature is that once Peter Pan and the Lost Boys commandeer The Jolly Roger they equip her with Tinkerbell’s pixie dust enabling the ship to fly them to London.

Another famous ship was sailed by the real, but ambiguous pirate captain, Blackbeard. It is believed that after capturing the French merchant and slave ship, La Concorde he rechristened her The Queen Anne's Revenge, which he later abandoned and grounded a year before his death. Some speculate that the shipwreck has been found off the coast of North Carolina and a team has been working on validating the identity of the ship.

Of course, not all famous ships were captained by pirates. The Columbia is considered to be one of the most famous U.S. sailboats as she won the America’s Cup twice. The race is named after the schooner America that won the 1851 Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup. Ship enthusiasts will also recognize not just famous ships but popular makes of ships, such as an 1895 Sail Model Defender or a classic Olympic Racer from the 1930's.
