Humpback Whales

Humpback whales, those majestic singers of the sea, lead fascinating lives. These baleen whales are known for their acrobatic breaches, haunting songs, and impressive migrations. You'll find them in oceans worldwide, from the frigid polar regions where they feed, to the warm tropical waters where they breed.

These gentle giants can live for 45-100 years, traversing thousands of miles each year. During the summer, they gorge on krill and small fish in nutrient-rich waters. Then, as winter approaches, they migrate to warmer climates to mate and give birth.

Despite their immense size, humpbacks are generally not considered dangerous to humans. They are curious and sometimes interact with boats, but attacks are extremely rare. Their primary concern is feeding and breeding.

Sadly, humpback whales were once heavily hunted for their blubber, which was rendered into oil for lamps and machinery. This exploitation severely depleted their populations. Thankfully, international protection has allowed their numbers to recover, though they still face threats like entanglement in fishing gear and ship strikes. Their songs echo through the ocean, a testament to resilience and the enduring wonder of the natural world.
