Four Well Known Birds of Coastal Bird Decor

Apr 10th 2016

If you ask anyone who loves the sea to describe their affection they will probably mention the birds that flock to the water. Some cannot even imagine the one without the other, and many equate both with the tranquility and freedom of coastal living. Even those who are just beginning to become acquainted with the sea can at least picture some of the many birds associated with coastal regions.

The four most well known birds seem to be gulls, pelicans, puffins, and herons. Gulls and pelicans are the most seen in Coastal Bird Decor and therefore are the ones most associated with the sea. Gulls are well known for their grey or white appearance and distinctive harsh call. They are typically medium to large birds and usually bear black markings on the head or wings. Perhaps the most distinctive feature is the large bill equipped with unhinging jaws that enables them to consume large animals though they also eat crabs and small fish. Gulls are also adept scavengers, making them common visitors to beaches during the tourist season.

Pelicans are also large water birds, characterized by a long beak and large throat pouch used in catching prey. They are also able to drain any water they scooped up with their food before swallowing. They also have predominantly pale plumage except for the bills, pouches and bare facial skin that become brightly colored before the breeding season.

Puffins are small birds and due to their black and white plumage, stocky build, and large beaks are sometimes mistaken for penguins. They also dive for food, much the same as penguins and have short wings that are adapted for swimming. Unlike the penguins, but like the pelican, their bill color brightens during breeding season. Afterwards, the colorful parts are shed, leaving smaller, duller beaks.

Last, but not least, herons are medium to large sized birds with long legs and necks that are able to form an s-shape, due to the special shape of the sixth vertebrae. The neck is able to retract and extend, but during flight is retracted unlike most other long-necked birds. Like the gulls and pelican, they possess long bills to aide in catching their meals. However, herons are both freshwater and coastal birds.
